Keeping on the sidelines of the UN Security Council meeting and the General Assembly voting, PM Narendra Modi has spoken to his counterpart Vladimir Putin about Indian students stuck in the war zone.

It is confirmed that PM Modi spoke to Putin, discussing evacuation of Indian students from Kharkiv on February 25. This is the second call been made from India about the violence in Ukraine. The current call was only to determine the safety of the Indian students stuck in Ukraine.

Kharkiv is Ukraine’s second-largest city and has been homing some 4000 Indian students. On March 01, the Indian embassy in Ukraine issued an advisory asking all the Indian nationals to immediately leave Kharkiv for their safety and security. The embassy asked the Indian citizens to proceed to Pesochin, Babaye, and Bezlyudovka as soon as possible.

Efforts are being made to help students reach Eastern Ukraine and then carry out evacuation. “The Embassy (in Kyiv) was asked to set up a temporary office in Lviv to facilitate border crossings by Indians. A substantial segment of our Embassy team is now at Lviv for this purpose. Location of the other segment of the Embassy team is dynamic,” the spokesperson added.

Since the first advisory has been issued from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), 8000 children have been brought back home alive. According to the latest reports from the MEA, it is best those who wish to be evacuated need to move through Moldova as the newfound route for safety.

The new travel advisory has suggested that Indians stuck in Ukraine should come towards Hungary to explore the new route that opens through Moldova, according to a confirmed formal statement by External affairs ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi.

It has further been advised not to move to locations of evacuation on their own and do take help and support of concerned authorities by moving to western parts of the country and seeking shelter in nearby towns.   Envoys are already on their way to the concerned smaller towns around Ukraine. They will be overseeing the evacuation process of Indians. A total of 1,396 students had reached India so far in six evacuation flights, added Bagchi.
