Modi 3.0 Cabinet Update: Continuity and Charges in Key Portfolios

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new cabinet, dubbed with Modi 3.0, has taken shape, bolstering stability in key ministries while introducing new faces in several others. On Sunday June 9, Modi along with 30 Cabinet Ministers, 5 Ministers of State with Independent Charge and 36 Ministers of State took the oath, marking the beginning of the Modi 3.0 term .

The Big Four: Unchanged Powerhouses

In a move indicating permanence, Prime Minister Modi has retained the leadership of four crucial ministries:

Home Ministry: Known for his strong grip on national security and internal affairs, Amit Shah continues to rudder the Ministry of Home Affairs. He got an additional responsibility in the form of the Ministry of Cooperation.

Finance Ministry: Nirmala Sitaraman  holds onto the Finance Ministry, overseeing the economic policy and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. Her role will be vital in navigating the post pandemic economic recovery and implementing fiscal consolidation.

External Affairs Ministry: S. Jaishankar continues as the Minister of External Affairs, where his experience in diplomacy will be crucial in strengthening  and maintaining India’s global relationships.

Notable Appointments and Portfolio Allocations

Road Transport and Highways: Nitin Gadkari remains in charge, continuing his ambitious infrastructure projects aimed at boosting connectivity across the nation.

Agriculture and Rural Development: BJP senior leader and MP from Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan has been appointed as the Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, along with Rural Development, focusing on the farming sector’s growth and rural upliftment.

Health and Chemicals and Fertilizers: BJP President JP Nadda steps into the role of Health Minister, an important position post pandemic, while also managing Chemicals and Fertilizers.

Aviation Ministry: TDP’s Rammohan Naidu takes over the Aviation Ministry, replacing Jyotiraditya Scindia, marking a significant inclusion from the NDA partner.

Housing and Urban Affairs, Power: Former Chief Minister of Haryana Manohar Lal Khattar is a new entrant. He will manage Housing and Urban Affairs and Power, critical for urban development and energy security.

Heavy Industries and Steel: HD Kumaraswamy joins the cabinet to oversee Heavy Industries and Steel, sectors key to manufacturing and industrial growth.

Railways, IT and I&B Ministry: Ashwini Vaishnaw has retained the Railways Ministry and IT Ministry besides getting one heavyweight portfolio- Information and Broadcasting.
