Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu was recently body-shamed by social media users for gaining weight. Social media users called her “fat.” However, Harnaaz revealed that she is suffering from Celiac disease.

During an event in Chandigarh, she addressed the social media trolls. She reportedly said, “I’m one of those individuals who was first bullied for being too skinny, and now they bully me for being fat.”

She said, “Nobody knows about my Celiac disease. I can’t eat wheat flour and many other things.” Celiac disease is an immune reaction to eating gluten, a protein mainly found in wheat and barley. The disease also prevents the absorption of some nutrients. Celiac disease can also lead to malnourishment, loss of bone density, fertility issues, neurological diseases, and even cancer. Celiac disease can lead to both weight gain as well as weight loss.

Sandhu also said that she always felt confident in her skin. She said, “Even if I’m fat, even if I’m thin, it’s my body, I love myself.” Sandhu walked the ramp at Lakme Fashion Week recently. She was wearing a gown with a halter neck for the Shivan and Naresh show. However, she looked fat. Consequently, it gained social media users’ attention. The photos and videos had gone viral on social media sites. Many users had started trolling Harnaaz for her weight gain.

Sandhu is the first Sikh to be crowned Miss Universe title. She brought home the Miss Universe title after 21 years. Earlier, Sushmita Sen won the title in 1994 while Lara Dutta won in 2000.

Sandhu had also won the ‘Miss Diva Universe’ title in 2021. Subsequently, she participated in the Miss Universe 2021 pageant. Earlier, she also won the titles of Femina Miss India 2019, Miss India Punjab, Miss Glamorous Look, and Miss Glowing Skin.
