Ministry point the fault in the report as Global Hunger Index 2021 ranks India at 101 out of 116 countries

Global -The report on Global Hunger Index 2021 has pushed India seven positions and it was ranked at 101 out of 116 countries. The Union ministry of women and child development said that the publishing agencies have not done their due diligence before releasing the report.

In a statement, the ministry claimed that the estimates by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of UN regarding the proportion of the undernourished population were devoid of “ground reality and facts.”

They added that it is shocking to find that the Global Report has lowered the rank of India on the basis of FAO estimate on the proportion of the undernourished population, which is found to be devoid of ground reality and facts and suffers from serious methodological issues. The publishing agencies of the Global Hunger Report, Concern Worldwide, and Welt Hunger Hilfe have not done their due diligence before releasing the report.

In 2020, India was positioned at 94th place behind and it has been pushed further down. According to the report, the share of wasting among children in India rose from 17.1 percent between 1998-2002 to 17.3 percent between 2016-2020, People have been severely hit by pandemic-related restrictions in India, the country with the highest child wasting rate worldwide.

Neighboring countries like Nepal (76), Bangladesh (76), Myanmar (71), and Pakistan (92), which are still ahead of India at feeding its citizens, are also in the ‘alarming’ hunger category.

Looking at the misplaced facts and errors in generating the report, the ministry pointed that all the data that was collected was through the phone. They clarified that the four-question survey did not include a query on whether respondents had received support from government schemes during the pandemic or not. Also, it should be noted that the condition of Covid was way different in other countries like Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh than India, so they all can’t be calculated using the same variables.
