Middle East Nations Pledge With India To Resurrect Afghanistan

Afghanistan– The eight participating nations, India, Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan have discussed the evolving Afghan situation, with an emphasis that the country should not be used for sheltering, training, planning or financing any terrorist activities.

A joint declaration was made by the National Security Advisers and secretaries of the National Security Councils from these eight countries, after a regional security summit hosted by India. They late made a collective call to PM Narendra Modi, seeking complete compliance with the commitments.

Heads of seven nations’ Security Councils were present in Delhi recently, for the Regional Security Dialogue on Afghanistan hosted by National Security Advisor Shri Ajit Doval.  

Later, they issued a joint statement- the Delhi Declaration on Afghanistan. They not only discussed the global ramifications post the Taliban’s takeover in August, but also the emphasized on the need of humanitarian assistance.

Where-as the focus is still on the threats arising from terrorism, radicalization and drug trafficking arising from current Political situation in Afghanistan.

All participants assured support for a peaceful, secure nation condemning all terrorist activities. They also “reaffirmed their firm commitment to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including its financing, the dismantling of terrorist infrastructure and countering radicalization, to ensure that Afghanistan would never become a safe haven for global terrorism.”

Few others matters of concern included the “importance of ensuring the fundamental rights of women” as well as that of children and minority communities and fight the COVID-19 were also discussed.

The next round of scheduled in 2022 as agreed. All participants appreciated and thanked India for holding the Third Regional Security Dialogue on Afghanistan in New Delhi. The Delhi Declaration also said it was critical to form “an open and truly inclusive government that represents the will of all of the people of Afghanistan and has representation from all sections of their society”.

“These have important implications not only for the people of Afghanistan but also for its neighbours and the region,” Mr. Doval said in his opening remarks, adding, “I am confident our deliberations will be productive, useful and will contribute to help the people in Afghanistan.” This session was skipped by both China and Pakistan, who were also invited to attend. Wang Wenbin, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson, saying, “We have already given our reply to the Indian side,” and decided to skip the session in Delhi. Pakistan’s NSA Moeed Yusuf did not attend and while speaking to Reuters had accused India of being a ‘spoiler’ in the region.
