Meta, formerly known as Facebook, took down over 11.6 million pieces of content across 13 policies for Facebook and over 3.2 million pieces of content across 12 policies for Instagram in January.
The company shared the news on Tuesday. Meta received 911 reports through the Indian grievance mechanism between January 1-31. Reportedly, Meta responded to 100 per cent of these reports. It took down abusive content and hacked accounts.
Meta published the monthly compliance report following the IT Rules 2021. Reportedly, a Meta spokesperson said in a statement, “We review content against our policies.”
Meta took action against 1.4 million content related to adult nudity and sexual activity. It also acted on 233,600 pieces of content related to bullying and harassment and 1.8 million violent content.
Reportedly, in December 2021, Meta took down over 19.3 million pieces of bad content across 13 categories on Facebook. It also actioned 2.4 million pieces of bad content across 12 categories on Instagram in compliance.
Earlier, a probe was initiated against a Facebook page titled ‘Mangalore Muslims’ for posting abusive content about the 23-year-old Bajrang Dal activist killed in Karnataka’s Shivamogga. The Indian government also blocked over 60 social media accounts, including Facebook and Instagram pages, for spreading anti-India fake news.
Meta also caught dozens of fake, pro-Russian accounts, groups, and pages across its platforms trying to spread anti-Ukrainian propaganda amid the Ukrainian crisis. On Sunday, Meta shut down a network of websites posing as independent news agencies, targeting Ukrainians on Facebook and Instagram. The misinformation campaign consisted of about 40 fake accounts, pages, and groups targeting high-profile Ukrainian journalists.
Earlier in January, Meta removed a network of fake accounts that originated in Iran. Those accounts were aimed at Instagram users in Scotland. The network used fake accounts to pose as locals in England and Scotland.
