Meta To Enable Default End-To-End Encryption For Messenger

Meta, the company behind social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, is expanding testing for end-to-end encryption (E2EE) on its Messenger platform.

This means that millions of users’ chats will now have enhanced encryption to provide additional security. The company aims to launch default E2EE for one-to-one chats by the end of the year.

End-to-end encryption is a security measure that ensures private messages are kept private and protected from unauthorized access.

Meta has been learning from the WhatsApp team about effective message delivery in a large-scale E2EE environment, focusing on scalability, dependability, simplicity, and lightweight functionality.

In addition to encryption, Meta is also working on making Messenger less complicated, especially for users with poor internet connectivity. They have reconstructed over 100 features to make the platform more user-friendly.

Meta has introduced another new feature called real-time avatars on Messenger. This feature allows users to hide their actual faces during video calls and instead show an animated version of themselves. It acts as a transition between having the camera enabled and disabled.

Facebook Messenger will no longer support sending SMS texts via Android phones starting from September 28.

This means that users will have to use the traditional SMS application on their Android phones to send messages over the cellular network.

Instead, Android users will be encouraged to use the Google Messages app for regular messaging. This change is part of Meta’s efforts to streamline its messaging platforms and focus on its core features.

The Messenger application’s inbox will also undergo changes, and it will primarily be used for chatting with Facebook friends.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has been making changes to its Threads application to improve user engagement, including adding new features like the Your Like Tab.
