Mehbooba demands to restore Kashmir’s flag then will hold the tricolor

The former Chief Minister of J&K Mehbooba Mufti was released after more than 14 months of arrest, since the Indian government had nullified the special status of the province of Jammu and Kashmir on Aug 5, 2019. 

A PDP spokesperson stated that Ms. Mufti would address a press meet in Srinagar on October 16 as she had not addressed the public since her arrest in 2019. She was the last senior leader taken under detention in Kashmir. 

Addressing correspondents for the first time after release, she said first restore J&K’s flag only then will hold the national tricolor.

“We had agreed to a liberal, secular, and democratic India. Let me reveal to them we are not happy, we are incompatible with the present India where minorities and Dalits are mistreated and where they attempted to disregard us by plundering our dignity,” Mufti added. 

In response, the Jammu and Kashmir BJP leader called the comment ‘seditious’ and requested for her arrest. “No force on earth” can either lift the state flag again or reestablish Article 370, which gave special status to the J&K, he added.

Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Ravinder Raina told columnists, that he has requested Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to take a record of Mehbooba Mufti’s seditious remarks and put her behind bars. He added, if Kashmiri political leaders are feeling so uncomfortable in India, they can go to China and Pakistan, he included.

Prior, in March the National Conference (NC) Vice-president Omar Abdullah and president Dr. Farooq Abdullah also got released from detention for over seven months. 

Ms. Mufti has been in contact with Dr. Abdullah over the past three months to continue the plan of the Gupkar Declaration. The ‘Gupkar Declaration’ is a pledge of Kashmir’s major political parties took on August 4, 2019, in a gathering that was held at Senior Abdullah’s home along Srinagar’s Gupkar Road, the Hindustan Times sources announced. 

Ms. Mufti is among the top leaders of J&K who supports a joint battle for the reclamation of J&K’s special status under the Gupkar Declaration. Declaring on Friday that she will not contest for election till the restoration of J&K’s special status under the Constitution takes place.
