Masala Chai Named As 2nd Best Non-Alcoholic Beverage In The World

Masala Chai, a beloved drink from our country, has been honored as the world’s second-best non-alcoholic beverage. This recognition comes from TasteAtlas, an extensive online guide that explores traditional foods and drinks globally.

Just a few days back, India’s Mango Lassi was also awarded as the ‘Best Dairy Beverage’ in the world on the same global platform TasteAtlas.

Masala Chai is a special Indian tea made by boiling black tea with a mix of aromatic spices, milk, and sugar. Its name combines two Hindi words: “chai” meaning “tea” and “masala” for “spices.” Interestingly, the word “chai” has its roots in the Mandarin word “chá.”

Aguas Frescas took the top spot in this international list from Mexico, but our Masala Chai secured a proud second position. Its achievement is not just limited to this global ranking.

It has also been named the best among Indian foods and drinks, reflecting its deep connection and importance in our Indian culture and culinary traditions.

The online food guide TasteAtlas, while announcing this honor on Instagram, described Chai Masala beautifully.

They mentioned that it’s an aromatic Indian beverage made with sweetened black tea and milk, flavored with a mix of spices like cardamom, ground ginger, cloves, cinnamon, and black peppercorns. This blend of spices is what gives Masala Chai its distinctive and beloved flavor.

An interesting point to note is the historical context of Masala Chai, which is intertwined with the British tea trade.

Back in the 19th century, when China dominated the tea trade, the British were searching for new markets to satisfy Europe’s high demand for black tea. This search led to the evolution and popularization of tea in India.

Globally, in a broader ranking that included all non-alcoholic beverages, Masala Chai was placed third, coming in after Hong Kong-style Milk Tea and the Mexican Aguas Frescas.
This recognition of Masala Chai on a global platform celebrates a part of our rich culinary heritage and underscores the global appeal of our traditional tastes and flavors.
