In a shocking turn of events, Markus Jooste, the former chief executive of the multinational retailer Steinhoff, has died by suicide. The news comes just a day after Jooste was handed a substantial fine of 475 million rand ($25.2 million) for his role in the accounting fraud scandal that rocked Steinhoff.
Local media in South Africa has identified the 63-year-old man who allegedly died by suicide on Thursday as Markus Jooste. According to Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut, an inquest case docket has been registered following the death of a 63-year-old man who sustained a gunshot wound around 3:20 PM local time in Kwaaiwater, a suburb of Hermanus near Cape Town.
Jooste’s reported suicide comes just a day after he was fined by South Africa’s Financial Sector Conduct Authority for publishing false and misleading financial statements and annual reports for Steinhoff from 2014 to 2017. The hefty fine of 475 million rand ($25.2 million) was a result of the accounting fraud scandal that led to the near-collapse of the retail group.
Jooste had been instrumental in transforming Steinhoff from a small furniture outfit in Johannesburg into a multinational retailer. However, the accounting fraud at Steinhoff, which first came to light in December 2017, tarnished his legacy and led to significant losses and numerous lawsuits for the company.
Jooste had been under investigation by South African police for fraud related to the Steinhoff scandal. However, during a parliamentary inquiry in 2018, he maintained that he was unaware of any accounting irregularities when he left the company in December 2017.
