Manmohan Singh urges Modi government to ramp up vaccination drive across the nation

Amid the unprecedented surge in coronavirus infection, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh wrote a letter to PM Narendra Modi proposing few suggestions with regard to the handling of the situation. Singh in his letter, published on Sunday, pressed on the need for increasing the vaccination drives across the country to control the pandemic.

Singh suggested the government to relax the domestic authorisation for vaccines which have already received approval from other credible authorities, such as the European Medical Agency or the USFDA. He said that to meet the country’s current dire need for vaccines imports of such drugs should be allowed by the government. “The relaxation could be for a limited period during which the bridging trials could be completed in India. All consumers of such vaccines could be duly cautioned that these vaccines are being allowed for use based on the approval granted by the relevant authority abroad,” he wrote.

In response to senior Congress leader’s suggestions, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan pointed out how the opposition leaders were using the ongoing crisis to play politics and to increase doubts over vaccines efficacy among the general public. He said, “It is saddening, Dr Singh, that while you very well understand the importance of vaccination as an important method of fighting the COVID-19 battle, people in responsible positions in your party as well as in the state governments formed by your party do not seem to share your view.”

In his letter, the Union Health Minister also took a shot at Congress leaders’s lack of cooperation and their “lack of gratitude” for the country Covid-19 vaccination development achievement. He said, “It is shocking that senior members of the Congress party are yet to utter a single word of gratitude towards our scientist community and vaccine manufacturers for innovating under trying circumstances and empowering the world with vaccines.”

Vardhan posted the reply in form of an open letter on Twitter. In his tweet accompany the letter, the BJP leader said, “History shall be kinder to you Dr Manmohan Singh ji if your offer of ‘constructive cooperation’ and valuable advice was followed by your (Congress) leaders as well in such extraordinary times!”
