“Manipur Incident Shamed Country, Guilty Will Not Be Spared”: PM, SC also Commented!

As the Supreme Court of India (CJI) took suo motu cognizance of the video showing two Kuki women being paraded naked on May 4 amid ethnic conflict in Manipur, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud stated, “This is the grossest of human rights violation,” on July 20, 2023.

According to Livelaw, the CJI expressed his concern about the incident’s videos to R Venkataramani, the country’s attorney general, and Tushar Mehta, its solicitor general.

“We want to express our sincere concern. It is time for the government to intervene and act decisively. Simply put, this is unacceptable.

The SC further stated that it is morally wrong and unacceptable to use women as weapons of violence.

However, the CJI did add that they are giving the government some time to act; if not, they will step in. Additionally, he allegedly stated that the court noted the incident for consideration among the cases involving violence in Manipur.

PM Modi stated that what happened to the daughters of Manipur could never be forgotten.

My heart is overflowing with hurt and rage as I stand next to this temple of democracy. Any civilized nation should be ashamed of the Manipur incident. The entire country has been brought low.

The Meitei tribe, which has a majority in the valley, and the Kuki tribe, which has a majority in the hills, clashed over the Meiteis’ demand for Scheduled Tribes (ST) status on May 4, according to the video that sparked widespread condemnation and calls for action.

The women were allegedly gang-raped after being molested and dragged to a field.

One day after the video went viral, the first arrest was made, 77 days after the incident.

In addition to denouncing the atrocity in Manipur, Prime Minister Modi also mentioned incidents in the states of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, both governed by the Congress party. He said: I appeal to all Chief Ministers to strengthen law and order in their states, especially concerning our mothers and sisters, and take strictest action, be it in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, or Manipur. We should put politics aside and take decisive action against heinous crimes everywhere in India.

The Prime Minister’s statement in parliament regarding the horror in Manipur has been demanded by opposition parties.

A total of 15 MPs have given notice that all business will be suspended for a discussion on Manipur.

Thousands of people have been internally displaced and are now living in relief camps due to the ethnic violence in Manipur, which has claimed over 120 lives.

What happened in Manipur?

A shocking video showing at least two Kuki women being paraded towards a paddy field by a group of men believed to be from the Meitei community in Manipur is going viral on social media.

The women were dragged and sexually assaulted by their captors despite their distress and cries for assistance.

According to the police, the incident took place on May 4 in the Kangpokpi district, one day after ethnic unrest erupted in the northeastern state. Nearly 77 days after the incident, the video surfaced.

In response to the horrifying video of two women being paraded in Manipur on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today that he was filled with rage and anguish and that the guilty would not be spared.
