The Army force & Union Home Minister Amit Shah is continuously controlling the situation. The Manipur govt has issued shoot at sight orders for ‘extreme cases’.
The Indian state of Manipur has been facing violent clashes for several days, leading to the death of two civilians and injuries to several others. In response to the ongoing violence, the state government has issued “shoot at sight” orders in extreme cases.
The clashes broke out in the Torbung area of Churachandpur district on May 3 during a Tribal Solidarity March organized by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) to protest non-tribal Meiteis’ demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The clashes were between members of the Kuki and Meitei communities.
The Indian Army and Assam Rifles have been deployed in the violence-hit areas to restore law and order and evacuate people to safer areas.
The government has also imposed curfew in eight districts and suspended mobile internet services in the entire state for the next five days. Additional paramilitary forces have been called in to bring the situation under control.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been closely monitoring the situation and via continuous video conference meetings with the state Chief Minister and top officials.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has dispatched 10 more companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to Manipur on Friday to help restore peace.
The clashes in Manipur have highlighted the complex social and political issues faced by the state, where the Nagas and Kukis constitute about 40% of the population.
The demand for ST status by non-tribal Meiteis has been a contentious issue, and the recent violence is a reflection of the simmering tensions in the region.
