NCW has asked UP Police for explanation after Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi was allegedly manhandled while on her way to Hathras to meet gang rape victim girl’s family. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has called the insensitive behaviour of law enforcement in Uttar Pradesh completely unacceptable.
The incident took place on Saturday afternoon at Delhi-UP border when Priyanka Gandhi who was on her way to Hathras along with other Congress party leaders and her brother Rahul Gandhi to meet family of gang-rape victim in Hathras. She was allegedly manhandled as Congress workers and Gautam Buddh Nagar police scuffled. During the commotion, the 48 year old Congress party general secretary was held by her kurta at the DND toll plaza by a policeman who was wearing a helmet.
NCW tweeted, “@NCWIndia condemns the alleged manhandling of #PriyankaGandhi by police while she was on her way to #Hathras. This insensitive behaviour is totally unacceptable. Considering the sensitivity of the matter, our Chairperson @sharmarekha has sought a reply from @dgoup at the earliest.”
Another tweet said, “A copy of the letter has also been sent to @dmgbnagar and #DCP, Police Commissionerate, #GautamBuddhNagar.”
On September 14 the Dalit woman was allegedly gang raped by four upper-caste men in Hathras village. As her condition started deteriorating she was shifted to Safdarjung hospital in Delhi where she departed on Tuesday. The family alleged that local police forced them to perform her last riots in early hours of Wednesday but police maintain that cremation was “carried out as per the wishes of the family.”
