Mamata Banerjee is playing a very clear strategy as she moves little by little to target diaspora is three states- Tripura, Assam and Meghalaya. For starters, she has even Bengali politicians joining her back from other parties. Undeniably, the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress’ national ambitions are seemingly being shaped in the northeast.
Take for example the induction of Assam Congress MP Sushmita Dev. She had been with Congress for close to 30 years before she changed her ship and joined Trinamool Party recently. What she brings with her is also a huge vote bank due to the virtue of her prominence as a Bengali leader in Assam’s Barak Valley.
Political analysts can see that Ms. Banerjee is gradually rallying an anti-Modi team in her focus of three states that have a strong BJP hold. Their meetings with Akhil Gogoi and Raijor Dal in Assam is a testimony to this fact. These leaders were met by West Bengal CM and Ms. Banerjee together.
According to Trinamool’s West Bengal general secretary Kunal Ghosh, “There is clarity in the thought process of our senior leaders, and now we know what we as soldiers have to do. We will intensify our activities in these states.”
There is a lot of work to be done in these states as the party has never been dominant in them. Political analysts also believe that the party will have to ally with another one to make a mark in these parties. Cashing on disgruntlement cannot take them through the finish line either.
“In Assam, the TMC can be the facilitator of an Opposition front, while in Tripura it can lead the front,” he added. “The Trinamool is likely to ally with Pradyot Manikya’s TIPRA. He is a dynamic leader with a huge following and acceptance among Tripura’s indigenous tribal population.”
