Maldives Opposition Leader Asks President To Apologise To India

The leader of the Jumhooree Party in the Maldives, Qasim Ibrahim, has urged President Mohammed Muizzu to say sorry to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India. 

This comes at a time when there’s rising tension between India and Maldives. The issue started after President Muizzu visited China and made some controversial remarks.

A campaign called “India Out” has been causing problems. It was led by Abdulla Yameen, the ex-President of the Maldives, and his party. 

They claimed that Indian soldiers in the Maldives were against their country’s independence. This campaign was mainly against President Solih and his party. They wanted to use anti-India feelings for their benefit.

Ibrahim mentioned that talking badly about neighboring countries, like India, can harm relationships. He reminded everyone that President Solih had already banned the “India Out” campaign because it was a threat to national security. 

Ibrahim questioned why President Muizzu, who was part of this campaign, did not stop the ban. He said the ban should stay because ending it would harm their country. Ibrahim is asking President Muizzu to apologize to India and its Prime Minister Modi for his comments after visiting China.

The situation has led to India and the Maldives working together to remove Indian military personnel from the Maldives. This step is part of what President Muizzu’s party promised and shows the changing relationship between the two countries.

There have also been negative comments about Prime Minister Modi’s policies, especially regarding the development of Lakshadweep. These comments created more tension, even though the Maldivian government did not support them.

In the Maldives, the political scene is quite active. Legal cases and political moves are happening, like the Attorney General’s Office starting a case against President Muizzu. The rules for impeaching the president have also been changed in parliament, showing how political strategies are shifting.

With the Maldives elections coming up in 2024, all the political parties in the Maldives are trying to strengthen their positions. 

The country is trying to balance its internal politics with its relationships with India and other countries. There’s a strong need for diplomatic peace and changes in their own political system.
