The Indian government is focused on promoting the Make in India initiative in the country and highlighting it further in the world to establish a manufacturing sector in the nation.
In concern with the same, the central government has canceled multiple deals of purchasing short-range Surface-to-Air missiles and a tender for the purchase of 14 choppers for the Indian Coast Guard. The decision to cancel the purchase is a strong step towards relying on domestic strength to support the defense sector.
On Friday, the Ministry of Defense announced the decision in New Delhi after a few hours of meeting. The meeting was called to take some important calls regarding the defense sector and review import deals with foreign vendors.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been increasingly emphasizing on the ‘Make in India’ initiative for which he has asked the state government as well as the legislative body to come up with suggestions and this review meeting was first in the series of such steps taken to promote the initiative.
Many of the defense deals have already been reviewed and as per some sources, they have not been allowed to progress ahead with these deals considering the impact it would have on the country’s manufacturing sector.
Other deals are also under review including the purchase of six more P-8I surveillance aircraft and Klub anti-ship cruise missiles for the Navy. The review meeting came after a meeting chaired by Modi with the officials of the Ministry of Defense last year. It was necessary to take these decisions especially after the demise of Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, who died in a chopper crash on December 8 this year.
