Maharashtra government has announced a holiday on Monday to mourn the death of renowned singer Lata Mangeshkar.
On Sunday, the government declared a two-day “state mourning” will be observed on the demise of the legend. The state government also reportedly received a message from the Union government which said that even the National Flag will fly at half-mast from February 6 to February 7 throughout India.
The central government released an order that during this period, the two-day mourning period, there will be no entertainment held in the country. Other than the Maharashtra and central government, the West Bengal government has also declared a half-day holiday on Monday.
The Mamta Banerjee administration urged the authorities to play songs sung by the great singer for a period of 15 days as a mark of respect and remembrance. The Karnataka government also declared a holiday of two days.
Amid this, all the public entertainment initiatives will be prohibited, stressed the state chief minister Basabaraj Bommai.
Mangeshkar was tested positive for Covid and was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital’s intensive unit care on January 8 this year. She fought a long battle for nearly a month before finally succumbing to the virus. Her funeral will be held in an open ground in Mumbai’s Shivaji Park. Her body will be kept for the public to pray tributed on Sunday evening.
