Maharashtra Government Announces Toll Waiver for Light Motor Vehicles at Mumbai Entry Points

The Maharashtra government has announced a complete toll waiver for light motor vehicles at all five toll booths on entry points of Mumbai. The decision made after a state cabinet meeting on Monday. The new decision will be implemented starting from 12 am tonight.

During the cabinet meeting Chief Minister Eknath Shinde confirmed the toll exemption. Governmental news agency ANI shared an update on its official social media platform:

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the waiver is aimed at making travel easier for commuters during the festive season of Diwali. The five toll booths where the waiver applies are Dahisar, Mulund West (LBS Road), Mulund East, Airoli, and Vashi. Previously, light motor vehicles (LMVs) were charged ₹45 at these booths.

“Full toll exemption will be given for light motor vehicles at all five toll booths entering Mumbai,” the Chief Minister’s Office said, as reported by Deccan Herald.

These toll booths were originally set up by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation to recover the construction costs of 55 flyovers built across the city.

According to India Today, the toll collection began in the year of 2002, and the booths have since been a key point of contention with demands for toll waivers long voiced by political parties and citizen groups.

The waiver of tolls at these entry points has been a longstanding demand by parties such as the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and different factions of the Shiv Sena. Aaditya Thackeray from Uddhav Thackeray’s faction of Shiv Sena recently reiterated the need for toll exemptions as reported to Times Now. Political parties have consistently pushed for the move, calling it essential for easing the burden on commuters.

After this announcement travelers who are using cars, jeeps, and small trucks can cross the toll in and out of Mumbai without paying toll fees.
