Long List Of Cases Against Rahul Gandhi Filed Across India

Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to 2 years jail by Surat Court, however he got bail within a few hours. But this isn’t the first time, there is a long list of his cases.

Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, is the target of multiple defamation lawsuits across the nation, most of which have been brought by BJP officials and followers of the party’s mentor organization, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

Once Mr. Gandhi was found guilty in one of the defamation suits, the Lok Sabha removed him from the house.

These are some quick facts on the charges brought against Mr. Gandhi:

2023

In the most recent case, a court in Surat in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, found the Congress politician guilty and sentenced him to two years in prison for inquiring if persons with the last name “Modi” are “thieves.” 

Within 30 days, he may file an appeal with higher courts. BJP Legislator Purnesh Modi brought this criminal defamation lawsuit against Mr. Gandhi.

2019

In a different defamation case, a Patna court granted Mr. Gandhi bail. A BJP politician also filed this lawsuit because of his remark inquiring as to whether people with the last name “Modi” were “thieves.”

2019

In a defamation action brought by Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank after Mr. Gandhi claimed the bank had engaged in a scheme involving the swapping of currency notes after demonetisation in November 2016, the court in Ahmedabad granted Mr. Gandhi bail.

2019

A Bombay court granted Mr. Gandhi bail in a slander action brought by a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). His claimed remark that the murder of Bengaluru investigative journalist Gauri Lankesh was motivated by “BJP-RSS ideology” prompted the filing of this lawsuit.

2016

In a defamation action brought by the RSS, a Guwahati court granted Mr. Gandhi bail. The action was brought after Mr. Gandhi claimed that, in December 2015, the RSS prevented him from visiting Barpeta Satra in Assam.

2016

Gandhi was granted bail by a court in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra, in a lawsuit brought by an RSS employee. According to Mr. Gandhi, the RSS was responsible for Gandhi’s death. 

The Supreme Court decided that Mr. Gandhi must go through a trial in order to make his case in court.

2015

In the National Herald case, Mr. Gandhi is free on bail. He was granted bail in December 2015 in the case brought by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, along with his mother Sonia Gandhi. 

The National Herald lawsuit concerns the acquisition of Associated Journals Limited by Young Indian and the subsequent transactions involving the business that runs the National Herald newspaper.
