K P Sharma Oli’s Third Term: Navigating Nepal’s Political Landscape

Nepal’s election ended and they have appointed their new Prime Minister. With no big surprise, K P Sharma Oli became the third-time PM of Nepal. succeeding Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda. Prachanda lost the vote of confidence in the House of Representatives on Friday, paving the way for a new government formation as per Article 76 (2) of the Constitution. Oli becomes Nepal’s PM post-Prachanda’s trust vote loss with 165 HoR members’ support, including Nepali Congress and Rastriya Swotantra Party..

Appointment and Coalition

President Ram Chandra Paudel appointed K P Sharma Oli as the new Prime Minister, leading a coalition government of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) and the Nepali Congress (NC). Oli and his new Cabinet are set to be sworn in on Monday.

Late on Friday, Oli staked his claim for the Prime Minister position with support from NC president Sher Bahadur Deuba. He submitted the signatures of 165 House of Representatives (HoR) members, comprising 77 from his party and 88 from the NC.

Who was the previous PM of Nepal

K P Sharma Oli has previously served twice as Nepal’s Prime Minister. His first term was from October 11, 2015, to August 3, 2016, and his second term was from February 5, 2018, to July 13, 2021.

Oli’s leadership now faces the significant challenge of ensuring political stability in Nepal.

Currently, Nepal is facing political instability. So, strong and visionary leadership is important who can make decisions in real-time, gain public support, and strengthen ties with neighbors to boost international relations.
