As per the former ODI captain, he was removed by the selectors in a last-minute callow which was taken ahead of the South African series. He contradicted the claims made by the Indian cricket board president Sourav Ganguly where he said that unlike what he said about him being offered to keep the T20 captaincy, he never was in talks about it.
There has been a lack of communication between Kohli and the BCCI members. Kohli asserted the same as he stressed, “I was contacted one-and-a-half hours before the selection meeting on December 8 for the Test series.”
He also said that when he first informed the board members about his decision to step down from the captaincy, the decision was received well and there was no hesitation from their side. Kohli announced the decision to step down as the captain ahead of the World Cup and even the top brass of BCCI appreciated the call as they felt that it was progressive for the team.
Ganguly on the other hand said that the BCCI had asked him to reconsider the decision but after Kohli’s statement, it is clear that it is upon people and the media to trust one’s word over the other.
Kohli also said that the chief selector also had a discussion with him where they talked about the Test squad and both of them agreed to it and when he was about to end the call, he was told that five of the selectors have decided that they do not want him to lead the ODI squad. His reply to that was– ‘okay, fine’. Kohli then went on to clarify that some of the communication that happened after this, the issue was briefly discussed but prior to that, he was not informed about the decision.
