Karnataka state ministers slam Eshwarappa for filing a formal complaint against CM Eshwarappa

On Thursday, Bhartiya Janta Party’s senior minister from Karnataka, K S Eshwarappa, was strongly criticized by his party members for filing a formal complaint to the Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala against Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa. On Wednesday, in a letter to the Governor, Eshwarappa accused Yediyurappa of running the state in an authoritarian way. In his five-page letter, he wrote that there had been “serious lapses” and blamed the CM for “authoritarian ways of running the administration”.

Besides, the Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (RDPR) minister also accused the Karnataka CM of allocating funds worth Rs 774 crore from the RDPR department without his approval. Eshwarappa said, it was direct violation of the Karnataka (Transaction of Business) Rules, 1977, and contravened with the “established practices and procedures relating to the affairs of the state”. He added that another fund worth Rs 460 crore was also sanctioned on CM’s orders, bypassing him. 

In his letter to the Governor, he said that such “interference” was “highly unfortunate” and emphasized that “if the trend continues…I do not know where I stand as minister.” He added that he tried to approach Yediyurappa by raising the said issues in a letter to the CM, stating his actions and those carried out by his office were in violation of rules, but to “no avail.”

“I am forced to approach your kind self and bring it to your notice, these serious lapses and authoritarian way of running the administration by Hon’ble Chief Minister vis-a-vis Cabinet Minister,” Eshwarappa wrote.

State cabinet ministers slammed the move stating that the Eshwarappa approach was ‘not right’ and unitedly supported Yediyurappa. Arjun Singh, BJP’s national General Secretary in-charge of Karnataka said Eshwarappa should not have written the letter to the Governor. He told reporters (in Delhi), “If any minister has issues at any point of time, he should talk to the Chief Minister, and this is not the way, by writing a letter to the Governor. If he had any issues he should have spoken to the CM, we will discuss and see (what is to be done)”

The State Revenue Minister R Ashoka, siding with Yediyurappa said, “This development (of complaining to the Governor) is not good… such things when the government was functioning effectively will cause embarrassment”.
