Political turmoil in Karnataka has come to a stable day as Basavaraj Bommai takes oath as new Chief Minister of Karnataka. The Lingayat leader, home minister in former CM B. S. Yediyurappa (BSY) government, and son of former chief minister took oath on Wednesday after BSY resigned from post two years into his term on Monday upon directives from the Centre.
Basavaraj Bommai is now the 23rd Chief Minister of Karnataka. The leader of BJP’s Karnataka Legislature Party, Bommai took oath in a simple ceremony held at Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru and was sworn in by Governor Thawarchand Gehlot. Before taking the oath, Bommai reportedly went to meet BJP’s central observer Dharmendra Pradhan and BSY in Bengaluru.
On Tuesday during the BJP party meeting, Bommai was unanimously elected as the next CM after his mane was proposed by Yediyurappa.
The fact that Bommai is considered a trusted aid of BSY, it is believed that no policies of the former government would be changed. This indicates that 3667 acres of Ballari land to JSW Steel that is on hold will probably continue to be on hold.
Bommai, the 61-year-old three-time Shiggaon MLA in Haveri district of north Karnataka is the leader of the Lingayat community. He is the son of former Chief Minister and former Union Minister S. R. Bommai who was CM in 1989 for nine months.
Bommai’s unanimous selection was majorly due to the support of Yediyurappa. A BJP MLA said, “It is a masterstroke by Yediyurappa and a putdown to his detractors who raised a banner of revolt against him with an eye on the CM’s chair.”
Bommai’s election as CM keeps two key entities with BJP – the Lingayat community and also keeps Yediyurappa happy and content. Bommai’s positioning as CM will keep crucial Lingayat community vote safe with BJP. By this BJP has also pleased B. S. Yediyurappa and rewarded him at the same time for exiting from post graciously and promising to work for the party.
