Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai announces his cabinet: no Deputy CM keeps promises

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has announced his expanded cabinet on Wednesday, roughly a week after his taking office. CM Bommai inducted 29 ministers into his cabinet. 23 of them are retentions from predecessor B S Yediyurappa’s government, while six are new appointments.

This time Karnataka does not have any Deputy Chief Minister. Former Deputy CMs Govind M Karjol and C N Ashwathnarayan were sworn in as ministers in Bommai’s cabinet. Ahead of the induction ceremony, Bommai addressed the media in Bengaluru. He said, “Last time, under the cabinet headed by (BS) Yediyurappa, we had three Deputy CMs. This time, the High Command has decided not to have any Deputy CM.”

Before swearing-in of new ministers, Bommai had rejected speculations that no senior members would be included in the cabinet. He said, “We need both experience and enthusiasm.” “We also need to deliver good governance immediately. The selection has been done accordingly,” he said adding that 2023 assembly elections were also a factor that governed the list.
