Veteran actor turned politician Kamal Haassan is making his electoral debut from Coimbatore South. The MNM (Makkal Needhi Maiam) president made the announcement on Friday of contesting from Coimbatore South constituency in Tamil Nadu Assembly election, scheduled for April 6.

Along with announcing his constituency, Haasan also released second list of his party MNM candidates.

Haasan said while remembering his late father Sreenivasan, “My father’s dream was I should become an IAS officer and then enter politics. Though I could not realize his dream of becoming an IAS officer, my party comprises many former IAS officers. This is a proud moment for us.”

Coimbatore South constituency has been won in previous two assembly elections by ruling party AIADMK. In the last election, MNM though just 14 month old party, had a vote share of 3.72%.

MNM has also reached an alliance with actor Sarathkumar’s All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi (AISMK) and founder of SRM group, TR Pachamuthu’s Indhiya Janayaga Katchi (IJK) for the upcoming assembly elections. The parety would be contesting for 154 seats. For remaining 80 constituencies, both IJK and AISMK would be contesting on 40 seats each.

On Wednesday, Kamal Haasan had released first official list of his party MNM’s 70 candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections which would be held in phase 1 on April 6.

The leaders of IJK and AISMK had met with MNM’s Haasan in February with hope that the party would agree for a poll pact with them. Furthermore, Sarathkumar in his party’s sixth general council meeting had endorsed Kamal Haasan openly as the chief ministerial candidate. Despite of both parties issuing confirming statements regarding the alliance, Haasan had kept his cards close until last Sunday when he confirmed his alliance partners of the pact.
