JNU Refusal To Religious Celebrations Leads To Scuffle Amongst Students

Last updated on April 12th, 2022 at 04:31 am

JNU was the epicenter of religious clashes amongst students as they were not allowed to host a Iftar party or the Ram Navmi celebrations. Apparently, Jawaharlal Nehru University does not allow any kind of celebrations that are religious in nature to be held in its premises.

Clashes were reported recently over this issue in the campus. The scuffle happened at the Kaveri Hostel where then the warden issued a notice informing the students that celebrations of any kind need prior permission from the administration.

Apparently, ABVP students were seen prominently caught in the scuffle. Despite not having the requisite permission, ABVP students organised a puja programme on Ram Navami. They claimed left-wing students attempted to disrupt the puja. On the other hand, the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) has alleged that ABVP used muscle power and hooliganism “to create a ruckus, manhandled the staff and asked them not to prepare any non-vegetarian items.”

An FIR has been filed by JNU students against unknown ABVP students. At least six students were injured in the violence that took place after ABVP members allegedly stopped left-leaning students from consuming non-vegetarian food in the hostel mess on the Hindu festival of Ram Navami. Both sides, however, claim that more students were injured in the clashes.

Police has had to intervene and security has been generally beefed up around the campus. The campus also has its own private security system which is already deployed owing to the sensitivity of the issue at hand. This time, the celebrations have been marred by a lot by the recently released movie Kashmir Files which has rekindled a sense of unrest amongst Hindus and Muslims per se. While this has been seen as a BJP propaganda, it has generally created an atmosphere of distinction amongst both religious groups in the country at every level.
