Japan Lifts Tsunami Warnings After Facing 155 Earthquakes In A Day

The New Year wasn’t ‘Happy’ at all for Japan. As the country faced a series of earthquakes that started on 1st January. In total, there have been 155 earthquakes, including a very strong one with a magnitude of 7.6.

These earthquakes caused tsunamis, leading to waves more than a meter high. This has resulted in extensive damage, including destroyed homes and a major fire, causing widespread destruction.

There was serious damage like collapsed buildings, damaged boats, many burnt homes, and people suffering from cold without electricity.

As of the latest updates, six people are confirmed dead, with more casualties expected. Rescue operations are ongoing, with bodies being recovered from the rubble of collapsed buildings.

The tsunami warnings that were issued have now been lifted, but the meteorological office in Japan warns that small changes in sea levels might still occur.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has commented on the severity of the situation, mentioning the extensive damage and the race against time to rescue victims.

He is focusing on establishing sea routes to reach isolated areas, particularly in the northern Noto peninsula. About 100 members of the self-defense forces are currently involved in rescue operations in the quake-affected areas.

Currently, over 32,000 households in the region are without power. Several major highways and bullet train services from Tokyo have been suspended.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a warning about the possibility of more earthquakes in the coming week, especially in the next two to three days. The death toll has risen to 24, with seven deaths reported in the badly hit port of Wajima.
