It Wasn’t Rashmika Mandanna In The Viral Video, But An AI Deepfake

A video went viral on social media that appeared to show actress Rashmika Mandanna stepping into an elevator turned out to be a deepfake. This means that Rashmika’s face was artificially placed onto someone else’s body using computer technology.

The person who was originally featured in the video is Zara Patel. She is a British woman of Indian descent who had posted the clip on her Instagram account.

However, with the help of advanced AI technology, the face of Rashmika Mandana was superimposed onto Zara’s body, creating a convincing yet fake video.

This altered video quickly spread across social media platforms, especially on X (Twitter), where it was viewed over 12 million times.

Remarkably, this deepfake remained unnoticed for almost a month after it was first shared on October 8. People were convinced they were watching Rashmika, not realizing it was actually Zara Patel with Rashmika’s face digitally added.

As for who created this deepfake, that remains a mystery. There is no evidence pointing to Zara Patel or anyone else being involved in the editing of the video.

This is a growing concern over the use of AI to create deepfakes, which can be so realistic that they fool the average person. It’s not the first time this has happened; many celebrities, including Tom Hanks and Scarlett Johansson, have been victims of similar manipulations.

What’s worrying is how these deepfakes can spread misinformation and deceive people, making it essential to be vigilant about the content we consume online.

The misuse of deepfakes is quite alarming. These computer-generated images & videos are so realistic that they can easily invade someone’s privacy and harm their reputation by showing them in situations they were never in. It’s like stealing someone’s identity.

What’s more concerning is that videos, which were once considered reliable evidence in courts, are now under scrutiny.

With deepfakes blurring the lines between real and fake, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to trust what we see. This challenges our legal systems and poses a serious threat to the truth.

The Indian government must act fast to implement strict laws against deepfake misuse and ensure those responsible are held accountable. Protecting individuals’ identities and integrity is crucial in this digital age.
