Prominent Telugu star Sai Dharam Tej has made a magnificent return to films after a near fatal accident with ‘Virupaksha’. Addressed as a horror thriller, the film managed to grab the spotlight with its promotions. Its release on April 21 has created quite a buzz among fans of the actors as well as the genre.

But is it worth watching? Here’s a concise plot idea and review.

Virupaksha perfectly creates the ambiance at the very beginning and keeps on adding impressive layers as the story progresses.

It starts with the horrifying burning of a couple suspected of witchcraft in a village called Rudravanam. But before getting burnt to death, the woman places a curse on the entire village for its destruction within 12 years.

12 years later, Surya – played by Sai Dharam Tej – his mother and friend are seen visiting the village. Surya’s mother is visiting her birthplace (Rudravanam) after 15 years on the occasion of village deity Modamamba’s annual celebration.

As the story progresses, Surya is seen taking interest in the village headman’s daughter, Nandini – played by Samyuktha.

But things soon start taking an unpleasant route as on the day of the main puja events, a villager is seen returning from the forest in a possessed state and dying inside the temple. The priest, in an effort to contain the situation, calls for a detailed ritual and closes the borders of Rudravanam for eight days.

Sudha, a friend of Nandini, decided to take advantage of the situation and run away with her beloved. She crosses the border to reach her lover, only to find the person dying after being hit by a train.

Meanwhile, Surya – who was allowed to leave the village for being an outsider – had to come back to save Nandini who was struggling with epilepsy. He identifies a pattern in the deaths and realises that Nandini would be the next victim.

Surya risks his life to save his love interest, find the actual perpetrator and prevent further deaths. But will he succeed?

The movie’s end is refreshing. All the actors delivered a magnificent performance, powerful enough to not let the audience forget their roles anytime soon. The film’s crew has also done a splendid job of capturing the shots in the most beautiful way possible.

Virupaksha gives value for money.
