The new grown fondness or friendship between TMC Mamata Banerjee and Congress has left the latter in a dilemma. Congress is now wondering what they should be doing about placing a candidate to contest elections against ‘didi’ in the forthcoming September 30 elections.
Both seem to be ganging up against formidable opposition in the BJP. Sushmita Deb’s exit from the Congress to move to the other side has been amicable. Banerjee ensured that no bad words were spoken about any of the Gandhis in any public appearances or press conferences.
It has become evident that Deb could act as a bridge between both parties in the near future. But a mass exodus has raised eyebrows in Congress on whether TMC should be trusted at all or not.
Congress has not been able to garner any support in the recent state polls. The results show their desperation too. The exiting state in-charge Jitin Prasada joined BJP recently, and said to the media, before leaving, Prasada in his feedback said the party’s confused stand vis-à-vis the TMC during polls had confused its core voters as well. He also slammed the alliance with the Left at the insistence of state president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary, calling it a “miscalculation”.
It is therefore imperative that Congress must look at putting up a ‘symbolic’ fight unless they want to be seen already defeated before putting up a fight with the expanding TMC. Within the party, the thought is that its important to do so to be able to keep the morale up of those that are still a part of the party.
