IPL 2022: Why Fans Are Demanding To Boycott CSK On Twitter?

The IPL (Indian Premier League) 2022 mega auction ended in Bengaluru. However, a day after the auction ended, fans on Twitter have been trending a hashtag for boycotting four-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

#Boycott_ChennaiSuperKings was one of the top trends on Twitter on Monday in India. Many social media users are angry because CSK bought Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana. Many users vented their anger on Twitter on Monday.

Theekshana is a Sinhalese, which means a person originally from northern India, but lives in Sri Lanka. Reportedly, Sinhalese soldiers are accused of committing crimes against Tamilians in Sri Lanka during the military action against LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) in 2009.

One of the social media users wrote on Twitter, “Don’t try to normalize Tamil Genocide in Sri Lanka. Remove this Sinhalese player from the CSK team.” Another Twitter user wrote, “Around 20 lakh Tamil people are thrown out as refugees by Sinhala state Terrorism! No Justice yet, but Tamil People whistled for a Sinhala player in CSK.”

Another big jolt for fans was that Suresh Raina went unsold. Raina, who had a base price of Rupees 2 crore, went unsold in the IPL auction, on both days, for the first time in the history of the IPL mega auction event. In his IPL career, he has registered 4,687 runs for the CSK team.

During the IPL 2022 auction in Bengaluru, CSK purchased Deepak Chahar for a whopping amount of Rupees 14 crore, making him the most expensive Indian bowler in IPL tournament history. CSK purchased Mahendra Singh Dhoni (MSD) for Rupees 12 crore. CSK also bought Ambati Rayudu, Dwayne Bravo, and Uthappa.

Several social media users were disappointed because Raina went unsold on both days of the auction. However, the CEO of CSK, Kasi Viswanathan on Tuesday said that Raina went unsold because of his ‘current form’.
