IPL 2022 set to see new DRS rules, Super Over rules and Covid-19 allowances

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season will start from March 26 in Mumbai. There will be a match between defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium.

The IPL 2022 will see some major rule changes. There will be new DRS (Decision Review System) rules, Covid-19 allowances for the teams, and the newly-introduced MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) laws.

The new MCC cricket laws are set to be implemented in international cricket from October 1, 2022. The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has decided to follow the change effected by the MCC laws for IPL 2022.

IPL 2022 rule changes:

  • This season of IPL will see the number of unsuccessful DRS reviews allowed to a team increase to two per innings. Earlier, any team was allowed only one DRS review. The DRS was first introduced in the 2018 season.
  • The match will be rescheduled for later if a team cannot field a playing XI due to COVID-19. If the rescheduling of the match is not possible, the matter will be referred to the technical committee of the IPL.
  • Reportedly, if a Super Over in a playoff game or final cannot be completed, the team who finished highest in the whole league will be declared winners.
  • In the 2022 season, a new batsman will have to take strike even if the player who was dismissed had crossed over before the catch was taken.

The upcoming season of IPL is set to feature 10 teams once again with Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans being the new additions. It will also have a total of 74 games with teams divided into two groups. Other IPL teams are Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
