IPL 2020: KXIP owner Preity Zinta appeals BCCI to introduce new rules amid controversy over umpire’s short-run call

King XI Punjab co-owner PreityZinta has called upon the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to introduce new rules to improve the Indian Premier League (IPL) amid the umpiring controversy over the short-run decision during her team’s IPL game against Delhi Capitals in Dubai on Sunday.

In the 19th over of Punjab’s run-chase on September 20, Chris Jordan and Mayank Agarwal ran two after the latter clenched a Kagiso Rabada yorker down to long-on. However, on-field umpire Nitin Menon gaugedit as a single run, calling Chris Jordan for a short run.

But, TV footage showed otherwise, indicating Jordan’s bat was over the line. Umpire Menon’s dubious decision cost one run to Kings XI Punjab which has not gone down well with the team’s co-owner Preity Zinta along with a number former cricketers, experts and fans as they have taken to social media to vent out their dissatisfaction over the issue.

Zinta took to Twitter and said that the Short Run hit her hard, urging BCCI to introduce new rules in the game.

“I travelled enthusiastically during a pandemic, did six days of quarantine and five Covid-19 tests with a smile but that one Short Run hit me hard. What’s the point of technology if it cannot be used? It’s time @BCCI introduces new rules. This cannot happen every year,” Zinta tweeted.

In her second tweet, she asserted that it is important to ask for policy changes to improve the game in the future.

“I’ve always believed in being graceful in a win or loss and in the spirit of the game but it’s also important to ask for policy changes that improve the game in the future for everyone. The past has happened and it’s imp (important) to move on. So Looking ahead & being positive as always,” she added.

In addition, KXIP has also lodged an appeal with the match referee over the controversial short-run call. Speaking to news agency PTI, KXIP CEO Satish Menon said that the one run could even cost the team a playoff berth, adding that there is no for human error in a tournament like IPL. Reportedly, ICC match referee Javagal Srinath will review the error in umpire’s decision.

“We have appealed to the match referee. There is no room for human error in a world-class tournament like the IPL. This one run could even cost us a playoff berth. Hope the rules are reviewed after this unfair call. A loss of a game is a loss of a game. It is unfair. Hope the rules are reviewed so that there is no margin for human error,” Satish Menon as quoted by news agency PTI.

Former India batsman Virender Sehwag also hit out at the square-leg umpire for his decision, stating that it was not a short run. In a sarcastic tweet, he wrote, “I don’t agree with the man of the match choice. The umpire who gave this short run should have been man of the match.”

In the end, the match went into a Super Over with Delhi Capital beating Punjab.

The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League kickstarted in the UAE (United Arab Emirates) on Saturday with the opening match between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.
