International Youth Day 2022: Theme, History And Significance

“Intergenerational solidarity: creating a world for all ages.” Yes, this is the theme of International Youth Day this year with a goal to achieve ‘Sustainable Development Goals’.

Every year on August 12, International Youth Day is observed to recognise the contributions of youth to the advancement of society. 

Additionally, this day is observed to increase public awareness of the difficulties young people worldwide experience, particularly those connected to their health, justice, employment, and political engagement. 

The International Labor Organization (ILO) estimates that young people make about 66% of India’s total population.

India has the most youngsters in the world, with over 808 million of its total population under the age of 35.

Theme of International Youth Day

The subject for International Youth Day in 2022 is “intergenerational solidarity: creating a world for all ages”.

The goal of this year’s theme is to convey the idea that in order to accomplish all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (or SDGs) by the year 2030, every generation must participate.

This subject emphasizes the need for further action to build a better, more sustainable future for everyone. People from all generations must collaborate in order to accomplish this.

History of International Youth Day

The International Youth Day was established in 1998 by a resolution passed during the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth’s inaugural meeting. On August 12 of the year 2000, the inaugural International Youth Day was observed.

Significance of International Youth Day

Involving local and national government leaders, youth organizations, and conferences, seminars, workshops, cultural activities, and meetings are organized worldwide on International Youth Day.

Youth face several challenges, particularly in poor nations. Many of them are unable to fulfill their fundamental needs, such as finding gainful employment, having accessibility to healthcare, and other things.

A sizable percentage of young individuals worldwide also have mental health problems. Therefore, it is essential to identify these issues and work to find solutions.

The purpose of celebrating International Youth Day is to bring these issues to light and encourage conversation about solutions.
