History: International Olympic Day 2022

At the 42nd IOC Session in St. Moritz, the concept of an Olympic Day was approved. The concept of a global Olympic day was first proposed by Dr. Gruss, a Czech IOC member, at the IOC’s 41st Session in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1948. The objective was to honor the Olympic Movement as a whole.

The date was chosen to commemorate the IOC’s foundation on June 23, 1894, at the Sorbonne in Paris, where Pierre de Coubertin relaunched the Olympic Games.

This event was organized by the National Olympic Committees, and June 23 will go down in Olympic Movement history as a significant day.
