Instagram Is Reportedly To Launch A Twitter Alternative

Meta’s Instagram is reportedly working on a new text-based app, this summer, for those who don’t like to be on Elon Musk’s Twitter anymore.

Instagram, the popular photo-sharing platform owned by Meta, is reportedly set to release a new text-based app that will compete with Twitter.

The app, currently known as “Instagram’s new text-based app for conversations,” is internally referred to as P92 or Barcelona.

While an official name has not been announced yet, details about its functionality and design have been revealed.

According to reports from Lia Haberman, who shared the information in her ICYMI Substack newsletter and on Twitter, the new app will be decentralized, similar to Mastodon and Jack Dorsey’s BlueSky project.

This means that users of other apps will be able to search for and interact with users on this new Instagram text-based app, even if they haven’t signed up for it. The release of the app is expected in late June.

The app will allow users to log in using their existing Instagram credentials, and their followers, bio details, verification status, blocked accounts, and hidden words will carry over from the main Instagram app.

The new app will feature a centralized feed, showcasing followers and recommended content. Users will be able to post text updates up to 500 characters in length, as well as share videos and images.

One significant aspect of the app is its compatibility with other social media platforms, particularly Mastodon.

This move towards a platform-agnostic social media experience could provide users with a more personalized interface, regardless of the platforms they use.

With Elon Musk’s recent turbulent takeover of Twitter, Instagram’s new text-based app presents a potential rival for disenchanted Twitter users.

The app is currently being tested with select celebrities and influencers before its full release.

The standalone app aims to fill the void left by Twitter’s recent disruptions and offers an opportunity for Instagram to capture a new market.

As Meta seeks to transform Twitter into an “everything app,” Instagram’s text-based app could beat Musk to the punch.

This upcoming Instagram’s text based app could mark the beginning of a new era of social media interaction, providing users with an alternative platform for text-based conversations and content sharing.
