INS Vikrant: 5 Unknown Facts About India’s Largest Warship

INS Vikrant, the Navy said, displaces about 45,000 tonnes, making it the largest warship in the Indian naval inventory.

The first aircraft carrier built in India, the INS Vikrant, was formally launched on Friday by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who hailed the occasion as “historic” and an “outstanding emblem of self-reliant India.” 

At a ceremony held at the Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi, Kerala, the Prime Minister commissioned the carrier, which cost 20,000 crore to build.

The largest ship in Indian maritime history, INS Vikrant was constructed with cutting-edge automated systems. 

It includes important national industrial companies as well as more than 100 MSMEs, and it contains a significant amount of locally produced gear and equipment.

The carrier is the largest warship in the Indian Navy’s fleet, with a displacement of around 45,000 tons.

The name “Vikrant” comes from its legendary predecessor, India’s first aircraft carrier, which was pivotal in the war of 1971. 

It is manufactured by Cochin Shipyard Limited, a Public Sector Shipyard under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, and was designed by the Indian Navy’s internal Warship Design Bureau (WDB).

1. INS Vikrant Is 262-Meters Long

The 262-meter-long INS Vikrant carrier, which is larger and more efficient than its predecessor, has a full capacity of close to 45,000 tons, per the Indian Navy.

2. 2 Football Fields Can Fit On INS Vikrant Ship

According to a video from the Indian Navy, Vikrant is the biggest ship ever constructed in the country’s nautical history and is the area of two football fields.

3. Two Olympic Swimming Pools-Sized Ship

The hangar that will house the aircraft is big enough to accommodate two Olympic pools, the Navy said.

4. Indian Vikrant Is Named As Floating City With 18 Floors

The INS Vikrant, which has 18 storeys and is referred to as a floating metropolis, has 14 decks and 2,300 compartments.

It can accommodate about 1,500 sea warriors, and the ship’s galley produces about 10,000 chapatis or rotis daily to meet the needs of the crew.

5. INS Vikrant Carries 30 Aircrafts

Speaking on the IAC Vikrant’s specs, Vice Admiral Hampiholi has stated that the ship carries a variety of roughly 30 aircraft, including MIG-29K fighter jets, Kamov-31, MH-60R multi-role helicopters, as well as Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) and Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) made in-house (Navy).
