India’s UPI, RuPay Card Expand To Sri Lanka And Mauritius After France

India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services are expanding globally with the launch of UPI services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius.

The virtual ceremony, to be witnessed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, and Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, will also mark the launch of RuPay card services in Mauritius.

UPI, developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), is an instant real-time payment system that facilitates inter-bank transactions through mobile phones. RuPay is a global card payment network from India that is widely accepted at shops, ATMs, and online.

The launch of these services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius is a testament to India’s increasing bilateral economic ties with the two countries. It also reflects India’s leadership in fintech innovation and digital public infrastructure.

The launch is expected to benefit a wide cross-section of people by providing a faster and more seamless digital transaction experience and enhancing digital connectivity between the countries.

The availability of UPI settlement services will benefit Indian nationals traveling to Sri Lanka and Mauritius, as well as Mauritian nationals traveling to India.

The extension of RuPay card services in Mauritius will enable Mauritian banks to issue cards based on the RuPay mechanism and facilitate the usage of RuPay cards for settlements in both India and Mauritius.

Unified Payment Interface (UPI) has gained popularity in India as a mobile-based fast payment system for retail digital payments.

Its adoption is increasing rapidly, and it allows customers to make round-the-clock payments instantly using a virtual payment address.

The launch of UPI services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius follows the recent launch of UPI at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France further expanding the reach and convenience of UPI for international users.

Several countries have started accepting India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for digital transactions. Bhutan became the first international country to enable UPI transactions through the BHIM app.

France has also started accepting UPI at the Eiffel Tower, which is significant as Indian tourists are the second largest group of visitors to the landmark.
