Indian men’s cricket team captain Virat Kohli has opened two animal shelters in Mumbai Both Kohli and actor Anushka Sharma are animal lovers and have used their social media platforms to raise awareness about animal violence time and again.

The couple has always advocated for animal rights and they also recently shred about a dream of them opening an animal shelter, so that stray animals can also have a safe haven for them. Anushka Sharma has also been closely working towards fulfilling this dream and a close source reportedly told the Indian Express that she is planning the whole process.

Virat Kohli said in his Tweet, “To ensure health & support to stray animals, @vkfofficial has now taken its first step towards animal welfare in collaboration with Vivaldis. I want to thank my wife @AnushkaSharma for inspiring me by her passion towards animals & for being a constant advocate for animal rights.”

On the occasion of World Stray Animals on April 4, the cricketer announced this initiative saying that he has been thoroughly inspired by his wife’s passion for animals and is also looking for opportunities to help stray animals in the future.

The animal shelter is called Virat Kohli Foundation, located towards the outskirts of Mumbai. For this project, Kohi has collaborated with Vivaldis Animal health, which is founded by Kunal Khanna along with another NGO called Awaaz Voice of Stray Animals — a local NGO in Mumbai.

Watching their dream being fulfilled, the couple is very excited, especially Virat Kohli, who talked about the project said that the cause is extremely close to his heart as Anushka is very passionate about this project. He added that his vision to help the stray animals across India is very inspiring and makes him want to learn more about animal rights so that this becomes a safer place for them.

“I’m happy to be taking on this project with Vivaldi’s and Awaaz, and working with like-minded people to create some facilities to help these animals,” he said.

One of the animal shelters will be set up in Malad while the other one will be in Boisar. The one in Malad will look over the temporary rehabilitation process of the animal–mainly dogs and cats. On the other hand, Boisar centre will be a permanent centre, which has been set up with an aim to keep animals that are blind, paralyzed and are suffering from life long diseases or old age.

The Virat Kohli Foundation is also looking for opportunities to invest in the health care and education sector as well.
