The Indian Railways serves a substantial segment of the population and has long been a crucial component of the nation’s infrastructure.

Although passengers make up the majority of the railways’ revenues, many people may be surprised to learn that the film industry also contributes significantly to the company’s bottom line.

This article will focus on the relationship between the Railways and the film industry as well as the revenue generated by movie productions.

Connection Between Railways & Bollywood

Railways and the film industry have traditionally shared a tight relationship. Railway stations and trains are frequently used as the setting for sequences in well-known films and television shows, making them essential to the plot.

The Railways charge a fee for letting film crews use their facilities, and over the years, this has grown to be a sizable source of income for the Railways.

The Revenue Earned By Railways

The Western Railway in Mumbai promises to make a sizable annual profit from movie productions. They claim that for the fiscal year 2022–2023, they earned 1.64 crore from filming.

Due to the epidemic, when most productions were halted and social distance regulations were in force, this amount was lower than in prior years.

However, the Railways collected Rs 67 lakh from filming in 2021–2022. They made Rs 1 crore in the fiscal year 2019–2020 and 1.31 crore in the previous year.

Popular Movies and Series Shot at Railway Stations

The Railways have become a popular location for the shooting for film and TV producers due to their unique look and feel. The Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway mentioned that many stations have served as primary locations for popular movies like –

  • Lunch Box,
  • Hero Panti-2,
  • Airlift, and
  • Sher Shah
  • Chennai Express

during the past few years.

Besides, numerous online series like –

  • X-Ray,

  • Breathe into the Darkness, and
  • Dongri to Dubai

were also shot at train stations.

The promos of KBC (Kaun Banega Crorepati) were also filmed at different railway stations.

When selecting a site for a movie production, directors have their preferences. The Churchgate Station in Mumbai is the most frequently used train station for movie shootings.

It is regarded as one of Mumbai’s most attractive train stations, and because of its distinctive architecture, it is a favorite location for movies.

Sabarmati Sports Ground, Goregaon Station, Jogeshwari AT (Yard), Lower Parel Workshop, Kandivali and Virar Car Shed, Kelve Road, Kalakund Railway Station, Patalpani Railway Station, and Mumbai Central are some more locations that have been used for filming.
