Officials reported on Wednesday that the state administration has taken precautionary measures ahead of the expected landfall of cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ near Jakhau Port in Gujarat’s Kutch district on Thursday.
More than 74,000 people living near the coast have been relocated, and disaster management units have been deployed for rescue and relief operations.
The Meteorological Department reported that the Gujarat coast is in danger as a cyclone in the Arabian Sea approaches.
The Saurashtra-Kutch region has already experienced heavy rainfall and strong winds due to the cyclone.
The state brackets for another cyclone as it faces the second one in two years, following the arrival of ‘Tauktae’ in May 2021.
Cyclone Biparjoy approaches the Gujarat coast, with a distance of less than 200 kms. In accordance with the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a weather system is expected to cross Saurashtra and Kutch, as well as the adjoining Pakistan coasts, between Mandvi and Karachi near Jakhau Port.
The anticipated time of the crossing is between 4-8 PM. People from almost 120 villages situated within a range of zero to 10 km from the coastline in Kutch district have been shifted by the administration.
As cyclone Biparjoy approaches the Kutch district of Gujarat, authorities have taken swift action to evacuate approximately 74,000 individuals from the coastal region to nearby shelters.
The cyclone is expected to make landfall later this evening. Heavy rainfall was reported in some parts of the Saurashtra-Kutch region yesterday.
Cyclone Biparjoy is anticipated to hit Gujarat today, prompting the Indian Navy to be on standby. The Navy has deployed four ships carrying Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) bricks. Additionally, there are five relief teams stationed at Porbandar and Okha, and 15 relief teams at Valsura, ready to provide assistance in case of any disaster or emergency.
The Indian Navy has made necessary arrangements to tackle the impact of Cyclone Nisarga. Helicopters stationed at INS Hansa in Goa and INS Shikra in Mumbai are prepared to be deployed.

Additionally, P8i and Dornier aircraft from INS Hansa are on alert for surveillance flights and shipping of relief material and personnel. More HADR stores and instruments are being kept on standby.
The Western Naval Command Headquarters and area headquarters are in close contact with the state government and civil officials to ensure that the Navy can offer support in case of any emergency.
