Indian Men’s Volleyball Team Thrashes Chinese Taipei At Asian Games

The Indian Men’s Volleyball Team has made a historic triumph in the Asian Games by beating Chinese Taipei 3-0. India has become the top 6 teams in the event.

In a historic moment, the Indian men’s volleyball team achieved a remarkable 3-0 victory against Chinese Taipei during the Round of 12 match at the 2023 Asian Games on September 22.

The Indian team performed with an impressive performance throughout the match, and won the first two sets with a score of 25-22 each.

Even though Chinese Taipei played a good game in the following set, India ultimately secured the victory with a score of 25-21.

Amit emerged as a standout player, contributing 16 points, the highest in the game. The veteran duo of Vinit (12 points) and Ashwal (14 points) collectively added 26 points to India’s score.

Ashwal has now collected more than 50 points in three matches. He showcased his excellent form in these matches. Erin Varghese also performed admirably, he earned 11 points against Chinese Taipei.

This victory is really impressive based on the ranking difference between the two teams. India’s journey to the top 12 included extended wins over South Korea and Cambodia. Notably, South Korea, ranked 27th globally, was considered a strong contender for victory.

With this latest win, India has advanced to the top 6 teams in the event and is set to face Japan, currently ranked 5th in the world, in the quarter-finals. India has secured just one victory in six previous volleyball encounters against Japan.

Taking a look back at India’s history in volleyball at the Asian Games, the sport was introduced in the 1958 edition, where the Indian men’s team won the bronze medal.

In 1962, India reached the finals but finished as runners-up to Japan, marking their best performance in Asian Games volleyball.

India last won a volleyball medal in 1986, securing the bronze. It’s worth noting that the Indian women’s volleyball team has not yet clinched an Asian Games medal. So, this would be the first time if India clinched the crown of Asian Games.

The Indian men’s volleyball team includes players such as Amit, Vinit Kumar, Shameemudheen Ammarambath, Muthusamy Appavu, Hari Prasad Bevinakuppe Suresha, Rohit Kumar, Manoj Lakshmipuram Manjunatha, Ukkrapandian Mohan, Ashwal Rai, Santhosh Sahaya Anthoni Raj, Guru Prasanth Subramanian Venkatasubbu, and Erin Varghese.

This victory has marked a big achievement for the Indian men’s volleyball team. Now the Indian team will aim to continue their excellent performance at the Asian Games.
