Indian men’s hockey team lose in a contest for gold against Belgium, hopes for Bronze still alive

Indian men’s hockey team had a solid chance at gold at Tokyo Olympics after storming into the semi-finals but failed to turn it into an opportunity despite best efforts against Belgium on Tuesday.

Following the conclusion of the match, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was all praises for the team as he took to Twitter to say, “Wins and losses are a part of life. Our Men’s Hockey Team at #Tokyo2020 gave their best and that is what counts.”

He also extended his wishes to the team for the upcoming match for the contention of a Bronze medal. The hopes of the men in blue are still very much alive with the Indian side facing the losing team in between Germany and Australia.

The Manpreet Sing-led side failed to make it to the finals even though it looked solid on the ground. The team had taken a lead with 2-1 in the first quarter but it was inefficient when it came to preventing penalty corners leading the 2018 world champions to get the better of India and register a win by 2-5.

With Germany, the Indian team has a strange chance of scoring a victory and hence a bronze medal however with Australia, it will be a tougher competition as the latter had already defeated Indian by seven goals at the league stage.

Entering the semi-finals was itself a huge deal for the Indians as it was after 1980 that the Indian hockey team was able to qualify for the semis, which means best of four. It was a matter of double celebration as not only did the men’s team qualify for the semi-finals but the women’s hockey team also managed to grab a spot among the best four teams.

It was a historic moment for the Indians when the women’s qualified for the semi-finals beating the greats of the Australian side. Australia has always come out as an extremely strong side and with India beating the Aussies, it was a matter of huge pride for the country.
