Hundreds of Indian students in Canada are protesting against recent immigration policy changes that could lead to their deportation. These changes aimed at reducing permanent residency nominations by 25% and limiting study permits have left over 70,000 Indian graduates in uncertainty.
Many Indian students have been protesting for more than three months, camping outside the legislative assembly in Prince Edward Island, with similar demonstrations in Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia. These students, who invested years of hard work and significant financial resources, are now at risk of deportation when their work permits expire.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, under pressure due to a housing and jobs crisis, is reducing the number of temporary residents and foreign workers, despite the recent surge in Canada’s population, largely driven by immigration. The new policies also include stricter work permit regulations in areas with high unemployment rates, exempting sectors like agriculture, construction, and healthcare.
Student advocacy groups argue that the real issues lie in broader policy failures rather than the presence of international students, calling for more sustainable solutions to the challenges faced by immigrants in Canada.
