The Indian men’s and women’s football teams will now participate in the upcoming Asian Games 2023 in China.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports made an important decision to allow both teams to take part in the continental tournament, despite not initially qualifying based on the existing criteria.
The ministry recognized their recent performances and decided to relax the rules for their participation.
Previously, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had declined to permit the Indian football teams to compete in the Asian Games, as they weren’t among Asia’s top-8 teams according to the selection criteria.
However, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the Indian football team’s national coach, Igor Stimac, appealed to the Sports Ministry, seeking permission for both teams to participate.
The AIFF expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs and the IOA for their cooperation and understanding in allowing both the men’s and women’s teams to compete.
This decision is seen as a positive step for Indian football, as the sport has been making significant progress recently.
The Indian Men’s Team has a notable history in the Asian Games, winning gold in 1951 and 1962, as well as a bronze medal in 1970.
The upcoming Asian Games in Huangzhou, China, are scheduled to take place from September 23 to October 8.
This decision will provide a great opportunity for the Indian teams to showcase their talent on an international platform and make the country proud.
