In 2019, the UAE and India agreed on boosting bilateral cooperation towards deradicalization and combating terrorism. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for global cooperation and efforts to counter the looming threat of radicalization and terrorism in the world in view of the developments in Afghanistan.
“I believe the biggest challenges in this region are related to peace, security, and trust deficit and the root cause of these problems is increasing radicalization. Recent developments in Afghanistan have made this challenge more apparent. The SCO should take an initiative on this issue,” PM Modi had said during an SCO Summit.
In its efforts to counter global terrorism, the UAE has also taken considerable measures to curb extremist ideologies and radicalization. The UAE has made notable contributions to the global fight against extremist movements such as the Taliban in Afghanistan. Along with monitoring and curbing terror financing, the country has deployed necessary forces in Afghanistan to fight growing terrorism and extremist movement.
It is important to note that the Emirati government has been raising concerns about the growth and consolidation of other violent extremist groups in Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover of the landlocked country. As part of its humanitarian role, the UAE provided tonnes of medical and food aid to thousands of Afghan refugees affected by the current turmoil in the crisis-hit country.
Furthermore, it carried out evacuations for hundreds of refugees who were in dire need of assistance. The UAE has also emerged as an important strategic partner for India in the GCC region. Prioritizing pluralism and tolerance, the two countries must step up efforts to minimize the rising influence of the Taliban in Afghanistan and other regions across the world. This cooperation against counter-terrorism will critically help in resolving the Afghan crisis.
