India to manufacture over 100 military equipment under ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision

In a renewed bid to bolster and achieve its ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision, the Government of India is kick starting indigenous production of 108 military equipment. Announcement of the same is to be made next week by Defence Minister of India Rajnath Singh.

Rajnath Singh, while speaking from his parliamentary constituency Lucknow, said the achievement will bolster India’s defence system and capability. He noted that multiple defence projects, such as BrahMos unit based in Lucknow, are being expedited in line with government’s vision to lessen dependency of India’s defence on imports and strengthen its ‘atmanirbharta’.

Reports suggest that list of equipment which are to be manufactured in the country include sensors, simulators, sonars, radars, assorted weapons, helicopters, next generation corvettes, tank engines, Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) systems, tank engines, medium power radars for mountains, medium range surface to air missile systems (MRSAM) and many more.

It is to be noted that move of making military equipment in India comes less than a year after Centre banned import on the said 108 military equipment. Out of 108 equipment, 49 were banned by end of year 2021 while the remaining 59 equipment will be banned by end of year 2025.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said during his address to post budget webinar of defence ministry on February 25, that 70 per cent of defence budget of 2022-23 has been reserved for domestic industry. Prime Minsiter Modi has stated specifically the entire process of importing defence items is a lengthy one and takes so much time that by time when they reach Indian security forces, many have already become outdated. The solution for this, hence, lies in opting for indigenous manufacturing.

This vision of Government of India has led to armed forces spending 64 per cent of their capital outlay on indigenous options during 2021-22.
