India to have 350-400 million 5G customers by 2025-26, says Nokia

Finnish multinational telecommunications Nokia has projected that there will be 350-400 million 5G customers in India by 2025-26 if spectrum auctions take place by June-July this year. The company also said that an initial 5G network in a few areas of India could be available from the second half of 2022. The telecom gear makers made the announcement on the basis of global research.

The number is based on research undertaken by independent agencies. The research accounts for one-third of India’s current mobile subscriber base, and nearly half of the total broadband mobile subscribers, most of whom use 4G services. Nokia said that if the auction happens on time, then one can expect the rollout of 5G services by the end of 2022. Nokia had rolled out over 1,50,000 sites in the country for its telecom operator partners for both capacity and coverage requirements in 2021.

According to India Today, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is working on other processes to hold the auction as soon as possible.

Nokia India’s head Sanjay Malik said that the company expects 5G contract closures with telcos soon after the spectrum auctions later in 2022. The company is also in talks with enterprise customers for deals related to next-gen technology. He said that if the auction takes place around the May-June period, then the initial 5G network rollouts can start in the second half of the year.

Nokia manufactures telecom equipment in Chennai. Nokia wants the country to consider attracting global telecom vendors to participate in the upcoming design-led 5G equipment manufacturing PLI scheme. Earlier, the government expressed interest in launching the 5G services on Independence Day.
