India To Get Its New Parliament Worth ₹970 Crore This Month

The new Parliament building represents a significant milestone in India’s democratic journey, providing a modern & technologically advanced space for lawmakers.

India’s new Parliament building, which is set to become the seat of power for the central government, is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 28. 

The construction of the impressive building, part of the Central Vista Development Project, began on January 15, 2021, and is estimated to have cost ₹970 crore.

Spanning an area of 64,500 square meters, the four-storey building is designed in a triangular shape and will accommodate a total of 1,224 Members of Parliament (MPs). 

The Lok Sabha Hall will have 888 seats, while the Rajya Sabha Hall will be able to accommodate 384 MPs. The new Parliament building aims to provide modern and spacious facilities for legislative proceedings.

The building features three main gates named Gyan Dwar, Shakti Dwar, and Karma Dwar. It will have separate entrances for MPs, VIPs, and visitors. 

One of the notable highlights of the structure is the Constitution Hall, dedicated to showcasing India’s democratic heritage. It is said to house a copy of the original Constitution of India.

The new Parliament building will also display portraits of significant figures in Indian history, including Subhas Chandra Bose, Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and other former prime ministers. 

Additionally, a portrait of the polymath Kautilya and a model of the wheel from Konark’s Sun Temple have been installed.

The expansion of the Parliament building was undertaken in anticipation of the delimitation exercise planned for 2026. 

Currently, the existing Parliament has 543 Lok Sabha seats and 245 Rajya Sabha seats. The new building’s increased capacity aims to accommodate future growth in the number of representatives.

While the formal inauguration is expected to occur soon, it is unlikely that the upcoming monsoon session will be held in the new Sansad (Parliament) building.

However, there are speculations that a meeting of Speakers from Parliaments of G20 nations may be hosted in the new building later this year, as India holds the G20 presidency for 2023.
